Our Story

Every herb has a verse.
Every seed, a story.

BibicalHerbs was born at the crossroads of two lifetimes of devotion — a devoted cultivator's deep love of the living earth, and a Bible scholar's reverence for the ancient texts. We source only the finest heirloom seeds and grow herbs that connect your hands to thousands of years of sacred tradition.

From our land in Ashtabula County, Ohio, and the warm gardens of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, we grow the very plants named in the Torah, the Tanach, and the King James Bible — and send them to your home with the verses that have always been their story. Each package includes a growing guide tailored to your climate, so your biblical garden has every chance to thrive.

This is not a gift shop. It is a garden of meaning.

Miriam
מִרְיָם · Cultivator & Founder

A devoted cultivator who has spent a lifetime with soil in her hands, Miriam brings deep knowledge of healing herbs — including her own tinctures and apiary — to every seed collection we offer. She manages our Ohio gardens and oversees every order personally.

Shemariah
שְׁמַרְיָה · Bible Scholar — "Guarded by God"

USA champion of the Chidon HaTanach and student of the late Paul Koret z"l, Shemariah brings rare scholarly depth to every verse we pair with a plant. His identification cards for each product are the heart of what makes BibicalHerbs unlike anything else.

Growing Guides

Every BibicalHerbs order includes a personalized guide for your growing zone. Here is what to know before your seeds arrive.

🌱

Seed Starting Mix

  • Use a fine, sterile seed-starting mix — not regular garden soil
  • Available at any garden center: look for "seed starter" or "germination mix"
  • Should feel like damp sand — not soggy, not bone dry
  • pH 6.0–7.0 suits most biblical herbs
🪱

Potting Soil for Herbs

  • Choose well-draining potting mix — herbs hate wet feet
  • Add perlite (20%) for drainage if your mix feels heavy
  • Avoid mixes with heavy fertilizer — herbs prefer lean soil
  • For Mediterranean herbs (hyssop, rosemary, thyme): sandy, alkaline mix
🌿

Amendments to Know

  • Compost: adds gentle nutrition — use sparingly for herbs
  • Perlite or coarse sand: improves drainage in heavy soils
  • Lime: raises pH for Mediterranean herbs like hyssop & rue
  • Worm castings: gentle fertilizer safe for sensitive seedlings
Miriam's Tip

Before amending, take a handful of your soil and squeeze it. If it holds its shape and crumbles when poked, you have good loam. If it stays like clay, add perlite and compost in equal parts. If it falls apart like sand, work in compost only.

☀️

Full Sun Herbs

  • Rosemary, hyssop, thyme, rue, sage: 6–8 hours of direct sun
  • These Mediterranean herbs love heat and dry conditions
  • South or west-facing windows for indoor growing
  • Do not group with shade-lovers in the same container
🌤️

Part Shade Herbs

  • Mint, lemon balm, parsley, chamomile: 4–6 hours of sun
  • These tolerate morning sun with afternoon shade
  • East-facing windows work well indoors
  • Ideal companions — can share a container
🌿

Mixed Container Rule

  • Group herbs with the same sun AND water needs together
  • Never mix rosemary (dry, full sun) with mint (moist, part shade)
  • A good pairing: rosemary + thyme + hyssop (all dry + full sun)
  • Another good pairing: mint + lemon balm + parsley (all moist + part shade)
Miriam's Tip

Each product card in your order tells you the sun preference of every herb inside it. If a collection has mixed sun needs, I will note which herbs to pot separately and which can share a container. When in doubt — call me.

🏡

Choosing a Location

  • Walk the site at noon — where does sun fall for the longest stretch?
  • Avoid low spots where water pools after rain (poor drainage)
  • Leave room to move around — you will be harvesting and tending
  • North Ohio: a south-facing slope protects from harsh winter winds
💧

Drainage & Water

  • Do the jar test: fill a hole 12" deep with water — it should drain in 1–3 hours
  • If it sits for 6+ hours, raise your beds 6–8 inches with amended soil
  • Avoid planting within 10 feet of a downspout or drainage swale
  • In Puerto Vallarta: rainy season (June–Oct) — plant in raised beds or containers
🌬️

Wind & Microclimates

  • A fence, wall or hedge on the north side creates a warm microclimate
  • Avoid frost pockets — cold air settles in low areas
  • In Ashtabula County (Zone 6a): mulch heavily in fall to protect roots
  • In Puerto Vallarta: afternoon shade from a wall protects delicate herbs
Miriam's Tip

When you call to order, tell me your state and whether you are growing in the ground or in containers. I will include a zone-specific insert with every package — what to plant when, how deep, and what to watch for in your particular climate.

🏺

Choosing a Container

  • Terracotta breathes — best for Mediterranean herbs that like to dry out
  • Glazed ceramic retains moisture — better for mint and lemon balm
  • Minimum 6" pot for single herbs; 12"+ for collections
  • Every container must have a drainage hole — no exceptions
🌊

Watering in Containers

  • Stick your finger 1 inch into soil — water only when dry at that depth
  • Water deeply until it drains from the bottom, then do not water again until dry
  • In summer heat: containers may need daily watering
  • In winter: move tender pots indoors at first frost warning
🌾

Feeding & Repotting

  • Herbs prefer lean soil — feed lightly once monthly with diluted liquid fertilizer
  • Repot when roots circle the bottom or emerge from drainage holes
  • Go up one pot size at a time — too large a pot causes root rot
  • Refresh the top inch of potting soil each spring even if not repotting
Miriam's Tip

All our potted herb collections are selected so the plants inside can thrive together — matching water needs, sun needs, and root space. I do not put a rosemary next to a mint. Every pairing has been grown and tested by hand before it goes in a box with your name on it.
